Pullman Melbourne on the Park – A Review
On any busy weekend in Melbourne quality accommodation is at a premium with many four plus star hotels charging in excess of $400 for a single nights accommodation. With this in mind and the need for a weekend escape, as I was trawling the hotels.com website I saw that The Pullman Melbourne On the Park was offering a king executive room with lounge access for less than $400. Could this be too good to be true, accommodation in a five star Melbourne Hotel including lounge access with complimentary canapés and drinks for less than $400?
Pullman Melbourne on the Park was previously known as Hilton on the Park for a significant number of years and is situated in East Melbourne within easy walking distance of the Melbourne CBD and iconic sporting destinations such as the MCG, AAMI Park and Melbourne Park. Another advantage of the location is that Jolimont Railway Station is situated directly opposite while a tram operates along Wellington Parade also out the front of the hotel.
The hotel has basement car parking, and communal facilities which include an outdoor heated swimming pool, fitness centre and conference facilities.
Upon arrival we parked in the Pullman Melbourne on the Park basement and made our way to the lobby via what can best be described as a compact lift. The lobby itself is old style but functional.
The check in process was smooth although when booking through a third party website they will require photo identification and a scan of your credit card.
The room itself was situated on the 17th floor and comprised a king bed, 2 chairs and a table and a TV (which we didn’t use) and no complimentary Wifi (unless you book direct through the hotel). The room is compact but did have a pleasant view to the south over the MCG.
A disadvantage of our room was that it was situated directly below the executive lounge and every time someone in the lounge moved a chair or similar you cold hear the scraping sound in our room. Quite annoying.
The block out curtains are effective so long as you make sure that they are completely closed.
The bathroom was compact with a walk in shower, toilet and vanity basin. In parts the grout in the shower was marked and would benefit from replacing. The shower head was also basic and unlike the modern rain head style we have begun to expect in five star accommodation.
With our room we had access to the executive lounge which included free canapés and drinks between 6pm and 8pm and also a free continental breakfast. This is a wonderful inclusion and certainly made up for a few of the issues mentioned above.
The location is ideal with a pleasant walk through the gardens to the Melbourne CBD.
Overall the Pullman Melbourne on the Park is clean and functional but is showing its age but the executive lounge makes up for it.
